Is a 5 VDC power supply needed when connecting an OP-420 to D0-05 PLC?

Answer

No, we no longer recommend powereing the OP400 series panels via the PLC com cable. The panels draw too much power and eventually damage the com ports of the 05 PLCs. We recommend using the OP-PS400 to power the panels.
